Biosmarts club is a totally student led FREE club, which engages in several projects throughout the year. Some of the programs are implemented both in the sponsored school in India and in by me personally here in Coppell, USA.
Some of the activities organized through the club are:
1. BIOSMARTs YOUNG SCIENTISTS CLUB:
(A perfect club for curious and inquisitive minds)
One of the initiatives through BIOSMArtS Club, is to engage Elementary / Middle schools to the SMARTs program. This program is designed for like minded kids who want to think beyond the everyday use of Science, Math and Arts. They meet once a week for a minimum of 6 weeks and learn how they can integrate topics in Science/Math and Arts to build amazing models and works of Arts. They do extensive research on any one topic each year and use this knowledge to make their BIOSMArtS project.
The participants are encouraged to think outside the box when choosing the topics they want to make. It’s not a STEAM camp, rather it is geared for kids who want to make stuff their way and learn beyond the everyday applications around them.
They can integrate principles of either Science/Math, Math/Arts or Science/Arts, into the model they choose to build, but they should be able to explain, the whys and how’s of it. We can have a small contest to see which of the student/ team made the best model incorporating all the three elements. At the end of the 6 weeks, all the participating teams/members bring their models and the a winner is chosen.
2. BIOSMARTs QUIZ CLUB:
The participants of the BIOSMARTs Quiz club meet every weekend for 6-8 during the school year, and participate in quiz/fun facts and other interactive projects. Each week, the club selects from a variety of academic topic/ subject, beforehand for the quiz and reads extensively on it. Each week, one person is chosen as the lead, who administers the quiz to the participants. On the weekend, the participants have a quiz contest and the winners are chosen.
This is a great club to join if you want to use some of the information you learn in your classes in a competitive setting, if you are a trivia buff, or if you are really good at memorizing facts, you can both learn and teach other members of the club and together prepare each other for HS academic decathlon.

3. ESTEAM Tutoring CLUB:
(“We can’t help everyone but everyone can help someone!”)
Many times, you don’t have to go out into your community to make a difference. You can help students at your school by tutoring them in subjects that you are doing well in! If you have a knack for certain subjects and enjoy explaining concepts to others, then this is the community service club for you.
Under this program, me and a few of my friends, assists kids struggling to keep up with school related tests and other projects. This is usually a program by appointment only and follows a "Buddy System" approach. We help students in subjects like Math, Science, LA and Social studies besides coaching for Math Olympiad and Texas STAAR test.
We usually meet with the kids depending on their availability and ours, and are totally flexible in our approach. The kids meet the student volunteer for 30- 45 minutes sessions and are coached/ helped on how to understand and comprehend the subject matter. They are then given questions to solve over the week and bring them back to the next session. They are also shown the best and quickest method to finish the project/ subject efficiently.
Other initiatives under this program involves the “Buddy reading initiative” where we help to kids struggling to read. It is a 30 minute program wherein the volunteers will be given a kid who they will read to each week for a 6-8 weeks minimum and longer if needed.
This is the program that is closest to my heart. I enjoy participating in this as I can see the impact it has on the kids.
PS: Most of the names of the participants is confidential under the ESTEAM program, as many kids don’t want their names to be released.
